God in Your Calendar: Planning with Faith or Planning Without God?

Everyone has a calendar, whether it is written down or carried in the mind. Our schedules reveal what we value, what we fear, what we prioritize, and what we assume about tomorrow. James 4 confronts a subtle form of pride: making plans as if life belongs to us and God is only an optional addition.

James does not condemn planning. Scripture honours wisdom, diligence, and preparation. The issue is not whether we plan, but whether we plan with God or without Him. Faith does not erase responsibility; it teaches responsibility to bow before the Lord.

Planning without God assumes control

James describes people who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” The problem is not their work ethic. The problem is their certainty. They speak about the future as if it is guaranteed and as if their lives are fully in their own hands.

Planning with faith remembers dependence

James answers, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” This is not a religious phrase to attach casually to our plans. It is a posture of the heart. It means we recognize that life, time, opportunity, health, and strength are gifts from God. We plan, but we do not worship our plans.

A surrendered calendar becomes a spiritual practice

When we bring our calendar before God, we learn to ask better questions. Does this schedule leave room for worship, rest, family, service, prayer, and obedience? Are we filling our lives with activity while neglecting communion with Christ? Are we busy because we are faithful, or because we are afraid to trust God?

God belongs not only in our theology but also in our Monday morning, our appointments, our priorities, and our decisions about time. A life surrendered to Him includes a calendar surrendered to Him.
